ok, so yesterday i was on the way back from the city, at flinders station waiting for the train to go. the train was passing through the city loop first before heading down the belgrave/lilydale line and it usually stops at flinders for about 3-5 minutes.
my train was on platform 3 and it was super crowded what with all the footy fans. i didn't have anything better to do, so i took out my book to read while waiting for the train to start moving. while reading, a train arrived at platform 4. platform 3 and 4 are set up in a way that the trains are actually next to each other... instead of having an actual platform with the trains on either side. trains passing by is a common occurence and i didn't pay the train too much attention. [aka engrossed in my book] but when i glanced up [which i do once in a while] and saw the lady in front [facing me] frowning, i started paying attention to what she wasy saying. the people sitting with her were listening to what she wasy saying as well.
"someone fell!"
......
"someone fell. someone was on the tracks when the train came!!"
and the elder ladies sitting with her started asking her more questions..
so after listening to the lady trying to explain what she saw... [and after watching commuters on platform 4 who didn't get on the train] the gist of it was this:
someone dropped something onto the tracks along platform 4. [apparently a lady dropped(something like that) her handbag (maybe something else equally important)] and this nice young guy jumped down onto the tracks to get the Very Important Thing[VIT] for her. But he didn't see/realise the train coming/couldn't get back onto the platform in time, so he somehow squished himself in the space between the platform and the train. we didn't know this at that point of time. but loads of people, myself included were pressing our faces to the window of our train while the people on platform 4 were huddled outside the train doors, trying to see if the guy was still there/alive.
anyhow, for some reason, the platform 4 train started to move, and you could hear some people gasping in horror while others started muttering[albeit not that softly] "no don't move!!" or "there's someone under the train!"
the train didn't get very far before it stopped again. and few moments later, this young asian guy came crawling out from under THE Train with the VIT.[well, i should hope so.... he did risk his life after all. i didn't see what VIT was.]
anyway, the guy started walking along the tracks [then i couldn't see much more]. i suppose he was trying to find a way to get out from between the trains.
this other nice father pressed the emergency button and spoke to the operator there, recounting the whole thing to the operator.
the cute bit about this was that the father-guy's son said,"is that what that button's for dad?"
Father-guy said,"Yea, kid. Don't go around pressing it for fun. It's only for emergencies. Just like this one. K?"
Then my ears were bombarded by a couple of kids screaming "Yeah!!" and "Cool!!".
Thank goodness the guy didn't get run over by the train.
Hope he got out okay.
