le festin

right.. i'm back! and my easter hols are halfway over.. here's my checklist:

1. amount of hwk done - after rounding up.. 0.01%
2. important things supposed to be done - ....also 0.00%
3. official paid-work -

oh did i forget to mention that while staying at my guardian's, they have kindly allowed me to work part-time at the newagency they own? it's in one of the biggest shopping centres around... and the valleygirl is HUGE!!!! plus, there's borders, dymocks AND angus & robertsons. there's target too!! and you know what i'm looking for in target??? the freaking h2o: just add water soundtrack. what?? the music's cool and DAMN nice ok.... hmph.. oh and did i mention that dymocks is JUST next to the place i work at??? :D

and there's gloria jean's, starbucks [yes cheong.. i can get starbucks anytime i want!!! *cue evil laugh*], sushi sushi, boost, a whole food court with subway and other stuff.... i'm not sure if there's bowling alley, but there's definitely village cinema there.. ah.... let's see oh! there's myer too.. just.. i never go shopping there, aside from that time pris and i were in the bourke street/lonsdale street myer branch looking for that myer bear for shauna.. haha..

right.. so i was super nervous at 11am yesterday morning. heh. um so, uncle dennis showed me how to use that cash register. i miraculously managed to remember by code for the whole day and not panic and forget it due to nerves. highlights?

i think it was one of the first few customers i had who wanted to pay using credit/visa. the previous times, i could ask my 'colleagues' [feels weird to say that], and they'd help me with it. especially since i wasn't given a code to operate the phone vouchers/eftpos/visa machine. so after i got my code for that visa machine as well, i happily operated the machine, pressing credit... and the machine showed me... key pin.

look, i know for credit/visa you don't have a pin number.. so why in the world did that machine prompt me to get customer to key pin??? i couldn't ask my 'colleagues' coz there were quite a few customers. plus i didn't remember the key pin bit when they showed me how to use the machine... so i gathered my guts and asked the lady for her pin....

"no pin needed for credit, dar."

me - guilty smile, i knew that... "oops." and practically half the people at the counters were staring at me.. i wanted to hide my face.. "sorry about that". and i can't remember if it was amy or sam who told me to just press enter... but oh well.. i got the receipts.. and gave one to the lady to sign...
thankfully she wasn't mean.. actually none of the ppl i met yesterday were mean.. they were just nice... heh.. and the lady said to me "are you new to this?"
and i smiled "yeah.. my first day.. sorry about that.." heh...
"oh that's alright.."

haha.. no one really taught me what to say... somehow.. each time a new customer came up i just automatically said "hi.. how can i help you?" or if they just got a magazine.. I'd say "hi.. just that?"

anyway, someone else [note: my recounts are not in chronological order... just what i remember as i type] paid by credit again.. on a side note, just an observation i made, sometimes ah.. the people here damn weird.. use credit card to pay for small amounts from $9-$10. what's the point? i mean.. it's credit right? at the end of the month when you get your credit bill, you get charged interest eh... ok la... maybe like that small amount, interest charged - no big deal. but imagine if they can't be bothered to carry cash around.. and everytime they make these kinds of small payments, the amount will snowball ok!!! then interest damn high you know!! sheesh.. plus carrying 20 bucks around in your wallet isn't THAT heavy..... maybe i should ask uncle dennis or auntie mary about it.... haha... i spoke to sam/amy [can't remember who] about it.. haha...

ok right.. back to that someone else..another lady paid by credit/visa again, hold on.. i think it's a different lady. it's so muddled up now.. hahaha.. and i was trying to figure out which copy of the reciept to give her.. coz you know.. in sg, the copy one is given to the customer.. but here, they print two receipts.. one that the customer has to sign. so.. the customer signed it... and i just took it.. and suddenly, called it belated reaction coz i already had several other customers who paid via visa/credit, i just said "hold on, did i give you the right copy?"
and she looked at it and said "oh. you always take the signed copies, dear."
"oh.. right.. sorry about that.. i'm still new at this... it's my first day today.."
"that's alright. you're doing fine."

phew.. throughout the day.. amy or sam would come and tell me that i was doing well/fine.. i still remember after i served my first customer. amy came up to me and said.. so how did you feel? i said i felt like my arms were shaking coz i was nervous.. hoping that i didn't do anything wrong..

whoah.. i tell you ah.. after lunch, which was about 2 plus pm.. and around 4 plus.. i was so tired of smiling at the customers... plus my back was aching... although that ache faded and my feet started to ache towards the end of the day.

omg.. stuff that i didnt tell anybody i did... this elderly couple wanted to buy metcards.. ok.. so they told me concession and concession.. they didn't say senior... either that or i didn't hear them.. couldn't really tell what they were saying anyway. so i just gave them concession.. plus i didn't notive the senior concession until much later when amy was looking for some metcards under the senior section and we were out of it... i feel so bad now.. hope they don't recognise me if they see me again..

another happened.. one elderly lady came up to me and asked if i had the good reading magazine.. um.. at that time i didn't know how to check. so i said to her"sorry, i'm not sure. give me a sec and i'll check for you." so once again... i went to amy/sam and asked them about it.. they said they'd check for me, but dunno how it happened, they were busy also so we just continued at the cash registers... and the lady went away... sometime later.. the lady came back with her friend and said.. she's the one who didn't know if they had it... [at me la.. duh] eeek.. i felt so bad... and auntie mary was there... and she just asked how she could help them.. she managed to find the magazine on the database for them and went to locate it... while she went to the magazine rack, i said to them.. "i'm soo sorry about this... it's my first day today.."

luckily they were nice... "oh that's fine hun...." and they were all smiley and stuff.. guess they could tell that i was really apologetic...

one last thing.... the first time i used the machine thingo to get a phone voucher recharge thing by myself... this girl came up to me and asked for $20 telstra recharge.. ok.. so i went to the machine.. pressed optus.. dunno how i heard optus.. but optus didn't have $20 that's why i was wondering why she was asking for $20.. so i said to her that there's no $20.. only $10 and $30. so she asked for $10.. then when i gave her the thing.. she said..i asked for telstra..

imagine me.. standing there. with the words 'oh shit' going through my head... haha.. yeah. so i got amy to help me.. then i had to get uncle dennis to redo the optus thing.. coz.. otherwise. i would have issued optus $10 for nothing. hmm... anyway, let's see.. what else happened.... ah yes.. the cigarettes....urgh.. i've never come into so close contact with those cigarettes before. i mean i touched the packs before... but i was selling cigarettes... some customers came in reeking of smoke or alcohol or a mix of both... urgh... sometimes it's the same smell to me.

right so this mother and son came up to the counter.. the mother wanted cigarettes.. some brand and bla bla colour.. i turned around.. in my head "wth? which one's that??" but i managed to find it.. that was the first time i sold the cigarettes by myself. haha.. amy was on break.. i blind la.. couldn't find the stupid barcode to scan... i think i remember looking for her twice..eck.. either once or twice... i remember asking her how to enter the pack of cigarettes into the computer and she said scan the barcode.. i couldn't find the barcode!! she said it was on the side. so i went back and found it.. eeek. lol.. apologised to the lady for taking awhile. phew...

another thing with the cigarettes... uncle dennis was at the counter this time.. i was just at the side.... and this lady asked for dunhill blue.. [or smth like that].. and i said the first thing that came to mind.. "which one's that?????" and they both laughed.. heh... i think the lady said... you must be new.. uncle dennis:"yeah just started work today.." "she's doing fine". me - "thanks" heh.. ok. i'm tired of typing already.. this took me... about an hour to do this..

Dreams are to lovers as wine is to friends
Carried through lifetimes, (and) spilled now and then
I am driven by hunger, so saddened to be
Thieving in darkness; I know you’re not pleased
But nothing worth eating is free

The banquet is now underway, so…
Bring out the bottles; a new tale has spun
In clearing this table, my new life’s begun
I am nervous, excited; (oh) just read the marquee!
A lifetime of hiding; I’m suddenly free!
My dinner is waiting for me
